Pre-Prep

What is Pre-Prep?

Pre-Prep is the next step in early learning for children in Victoria. It is the new name and expanded format for the traditional Four-Year-Old Kindergarten program. While the learning and play-based approach remains the same, Pre-Prep offers more hours each week so children can learn, play and grow before starting primary school.

There is no difference in the quality or content between Four-Year-Old Kindergarten and Pre-Prep, the difference is simply more time to play, socialise and learn through play-based activities.

Funded Hours in 2026

From 2026, Gellibrand Crescent Kindergarten will be offering up-to 20 hours of funded Pre-Prep for eligible children. This means your child will receive additional learning and play time before school with support from qualified educators.

Children who do not yet qualify for Pre-Prep hours will continue to receive 15 hours of free funded kindergarten as part of the Victorian Government’s Free Kinder initiative.

Am I Eligible?

Eligibility for Pre-Prep and funded hours depends on a few factors, including your child’s age and local roll-out schedule. You can use the Victorian Government’s Pre-Prep Eligibility Calculator to find out when your child qualifies.

Contact us at the kindergarten office if you’re unsure or would like help checking your child’s eligibility.
